Tucked in the western-most corner of Queens (the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world), Astoria is absolutely amazing! Lonely Planet recently ranked Astoria as a top travel destination and having lived in the neighborhood over 20 years I have always found it safe, neighborly, multi-cultural and so close to Midtown Manhattan: Times Square, Broadway shows, Central Park, museums and more are a short subway ride away. My favorite thing about Astoria nevertheless is the FOOD, both eating and shopping! Known primarily for its Greek population and Greek food, Astoria also boasts historical Italian, Irish, Czech and German populations. In the 80's and 90's an influx of Egyptians and Palestinians arrived as well those from Yugoslavia such as Croatians and Bosnians. More recent immigrants include Brazilians, Bengalis and Japanese! **All** of these ethnicities have multiple restaurants and shops in Astoria.
