1 km uphill from the sandy bay of Almerida, with its tavernas right at the edge of the beach, the village of Plaka, has a mini-market and some very good tavernas whose tables and chairs spill out onto the square. Villa Zara is just a 800m wander from the square. The small resorts of Kalives and Georgioupolis are also within easy striking distance if you fancy a change of beach. Chania’s Venetian Harbour is 25 kms away and Rethymnon 40 kms.
