Well, that's a typical area where you'll get to see what Paris is: a living city.
Many bars and cafés have opened along the Canal these last years (I'll give you the tips). Many new cultural hotspots around: the "104" (contemporary art centre), the new Philarmonique Hall, la Halle de La Villette.
Great outdoor places too: Parc des Buttes Chaumont, Parc de La Villette, and Paris Plage during the summer, all within walking distance.
Supermarket right next door, open air market twice a week along the canal, and grocery store in front open until late at night.
