Plaka is by far the best place to stay in Athens in order to explore the city on foot!! Apart from its close proximity to all the major archaelogical sites, Plaka is about a 7 min walk from the commercial center of Athens and Syntagma square.
A few steps from the entrance of the Acropolis and with no tall buildings, it's like living in a village. It is a unique area in Athens that resembles no other neighborhood.
There are plenty of restaurants and cafes in the area. I will let you know which ones to go to and which to avoid.
