The village was founded in the 15th century by refugees from Crete. Its name, Marmara, means marble in Greek. Big amounts of marble were found in this area and have been used for the construction of the houses and churches of the village.
It is said that the ancient city of Iria is buried at the same area.
Walking around the village one can admire the typical local structure with the narrow streets and the traditional white Cycladic houses and churches. Amongst the most attractive sights are the emblem of the Sommaripa family at the entrance of the village and also the churches of Taxiarchis and The Assumption with its three bell towers.
