in area-Maleme, GreeceThe village of Maleme is notable for its prominence during WW2 when Hitler ordered the first ever paratroopers to descend on the area in an attempt to capture the airfield allowing reinforcements to be airlifted in to conquer the rest of the island. This was the start of The Battle of Crete. Many of the invading force lost their lives due to the bravery and tenacity of the local Cretans and British and Anzac soldiers and are laid to rest in a nearby cemetery. There is also a Bronze Age Minoan Tholos tomb 14th to 13th Century BC located on a hillside just outside of the village.
