Georgioupolis: A cozy village with approximately 500 inhabitants. Here there are many shops and a large selection of nice restaurants. From the bridge "Almyros" can follow the fishing boats coming in to the village to deliver their daily catch. One can also buy fresh fish from the fishing boats come in with their catch. Here you can also rent a pedal boat or kayak and paddle up the river. The beach of Georgioupolis is shallow and very child friendly.There is an equestrian center just outside the village which offers rides in the area - even on the beach. Georgioupolis is the starting point for Crete's longest beach stretching all the 7 km eastwards towards Rethymnon. Kournas Lake: Ca. 4km from Georgioupolis is the only lake in Crete - Kournas Lake. From the restaurants here have a nice view of the idyllic lake and surrounding countryside - many also use the area for outings with picnic. There is also good swimming opportunities - one can also rent kayaks and pedal boat on the lake.
