“Splantzia” is a corruption of the old Venetian word for a Plaza. During the Ottoman era it was predominantly a Turkish neighbourhood, extending south and east of the walled hill of Kastelli in the old town of Chania. The central square became the Turkish mahalas of the town and, although today its formal name is the 1821 Square, the name of Splantzia continues to define this ancient quarter. During the Ottoman period, the church of St. Nicholas in the Square, previously part of a Dominican monastery, was converted and became to the city’s central mosque in honor of the Sultan Ibrahim. Today it is the only building in Greece that features both a belfry and a minaret. On the north western side of the Square the Venetian church of San Rocco, a round floor plan Venetian church stands unaffected by the Ottoman Empire and the subsequent upheavals.
