Charakas is a small village, located in the southern region of the Heraklion district. You can reach it via the Heraklion - Agia Varvara - Loures - Asimi (or better: Pretoria) - Charakas route. From Pretoria to Heraklion, it is a nice highway system. From Pretoria to Charakas, you'll pass through several villages.

Charakas has about 1000 residents, a few taverns, a kafenion, a bakery, a few supermarkets, and two gas stations. The village is named for the 35-meter high rock known as the Charakas Rock or Harakas Rock (Charakas means "Rock"). Built into the rock are the remains of a Venetian fortress that likely dates back to the 14th-century and the Byzantine church of Afentis Christos (Lord Christ). The church has recently been restored. The Venetians built the fortress, likely for its strategic, vast views of the Mesara plains.
