Experience the historic city center of Wittenberg with its Castle Church and the famous door where Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses. Stroll around the streets and follow the footsteps of Martin Luther and his colleagues. You would never guess that his little quiet town was the center of one of the most well-known religious revolutions in the world. The events that unfolded here in the 16th Century changed the foundations of Christendom. It was here where Martin Luther lived and preached, and on October 31, 1517, he nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church. The Protestant Reformation had begun. Sometimes called the “Rome of the Protestants”, many Luther memorial sites were added to the UNESCO world heritage list in 1996.

You will see:  Luther’s Residence  Market Place  Town Hall  City Church  Castle Church  Luther’s Oak  Wittenberg University You will learn about:  History of the city  Life and work of Martin Luther  The place where Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses  Katharina von Bora  Annual re-enactment of Luther’s marriage  The importance of Luther’s Oak, where Martin Luther 's supporters piled up a stack of writings of Church doctrine and set them on fire We start our tour in front of Luther's Residence, a large cloister that Martin Luther used as a home. The Luther family and various students and visitors lived in the central part of the building. The building is now a museum, open daily, and maintains Luther's living rooms in their original state. Our tour will take us to Wittenberg's Market Square, dominated by the fine Renaissance style Town Hall and the towers of the City Church. In front of the Town Hall we can also have a look at the Luther Memorial. Right behind the market on Kirch Square there is an old church called Stadtkirche, where Luther preached and he and Katharina von Bora were married. Their marriage is re-enacted every year during a popular festival. Next on our list will be the Castle Church, the famous church where Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door. Luther gave some of his sermons in this church and now is buried just under the pulpit. The original wooden doors are long gone, but the current ones are made of bronze and are engraved with all ninety-five theses. It is actually part of a church-castle complex. We proceed to another important landmark, Luther's Oak. In this place, in 1520, Martin Luther's supporters piled up a stack of writings of Church doctrine and set them on fire, Luther himself threw in the Papal Bull, the document threatening him with excommunication. In 1830, an oak tree was planted on the spot where all this allegedly took place. We finish our tour with Wittenberg University, where you can still see parts of the structure date back to from the XVI th century. Luther himself worked within these walls and quotations of his are displayed on the walls in the entrance hall.
