Kissamos or "Kasteli" is a town with a long and rich history. It stands on the site of ancient Kissamos, a flourishing, independent city with its own coinage and extensive trading links. It prospered particularly during the Roman and Byzantine periods, as the many excavation finds in the area show.

During the Venetian period a great fortress in the shape of an irregular pentagon was built. This fortress gave the name "Kastelli" ("Castle") to the former Kissamos. 

There is a port and fishing Harbour with lots of shops,pharmacies, medical center, cafés  and tavernas mostly along the seafront, with a regular ferry from the Peloponnese via Kythira. There are also daily boat trips to Gramvoussa and Balos Beach. 

It is a busy place, full of fascinating things to do, offering everything tourists may need. Kissamos is the ideal holiday destination for people who want to explore West Crete as it is close to some of the island's most famous sights such as Elafoni

Travel Details from the host -> I am the owner of the villa Kasteli Bay and I would like to welcome you to my house. I am Greek. I was born in Athens but at some point, when I was a teenager I immigrated with my family to USA where I now live permanently. My parents were from Crete and specifically from Polyrinia, a small village near Kissamos. Since I was a child I loved visiting my hometown and spending my summer holidays with my relatives. I always had a good time enjoying the lovely weather and the beautiful beaches of the area. I was then dreaming of having my own house there one day. The opportunity came many years later when I saw this amazing villa and fell in love with its magnificent location. It was like the landscapes I always liked to paint. In the beginning, when I first bought the villa, I used to come to Crete every year and spent the whole summer relaxing but unfortunately the distance and my busy schedule don't allow me anymore to enjoy it that often. Thus, I have decided to allow other people who are seeking to relax in a magnificent surrounding, to enjoy it. From there, visitors are able to discover the beautiful nature of Western Crete enjoying at the same time all the amenities of a modern and fully equipped house. During my absence, there will be always someone to welcome you and cater for your needs. Of course it will be a great pleasure if I happen to be there to welcome you myself.
