History
Tylissos is a small village, situated on the northeast slope of mount Psiloritis, 13 km southwest of Heraklion. One of the few settlements in Greece retaining its ancient name over almost 4000 years, Tylissos combines archaeological interest and authentic Cretan hospitality and culture. Its history begins in the Early Minoan II (2600-2300 bc) as an ancient sanctuary and Minoan city, continues over the Venetian occupation of Crete, and resurfaces as a historical and archaeological location through the archaeological excavations of Joseph Hadzidakis in the early 20th century. The archaeological site is a hidden jewel surrounded by tall cypress trees and lush vineries gathering around traditional Cretan stone houses.
