The building has stood through the reigns of two French kings, the French Revolution, the rise and fall of the Napoleonic Empire. In 1871 during the Commune, it was partially burned before being restored in 1875.

In 1862, the pastry brand Laduree opened its first store across the street. What was then a small bakery developed into the world’s most recognized pastry shop for its Macarons.
