Travel Guide Tour. Vacation Tour.

The City of London, often referred to as the Square Mile, is the most important financial centre of Europe. The history of this area is fascinating. There is evidence of a settlement going back as far as the Bronze Age, although it only became recognised as a City following the Roman Conquest of 43 AD.  Following the retreat of the Romans in 410 AD, the Anglo Saxons occupied the area until 1066 when William the Conqueror won the Battle of Hastings and occupied London, building the famous White Tower as a Castle/Palace and a symbol of Norman power. The tour will include the Tower of London from the outside as well as sites representing the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and Victorian periods up to some contemporary buildings. The sites will be visited from the outside and their significance explained by your personal guide. The tour is a walking tour of 3 hours.

The tour terminates at the Roman Wall by Trajan’s statue, at the entrance of Tower Hill underground station.

You will meet your guide on the steps of St. Pauls where he/she will tell you about the history of this iconic church built in the Renaissance style and one of the most important landmarks in London. You will then proceed to Stationers’ Hall, a typical example of one of the 38 livery company halls.London is a fascinating juxtaposition of the historical and the contemporary. Nowhere is this more true than in London’s historic centre referred to as The City, which was founded as a trading centre by the Romans and continues to play a key role in trade today as one of the most important financial centres in the world. This comprehensive 3 hour walking tour will cover all periods of the City’s history. Roman sites, such as the Roman Amphitheatre, the Temple of Mithra and the Roman City Wall will be included as well as the early medieval fortress, the Tower of London and the late-medieval Civic Centre, the Guildhall. After the Great Fire of 1666 London was rebuilt by Christopher Wren and many of his architectural gems are still there for us to enjoy. Victorian London is still much in evidence with buildings such as Leadenhall Market (featured in the first Harry Potter film). We will also view the contemporary architectural gems of today’s financial centre with buildings such as the Gherkin, the Cheesegrater and the Walkie Talkie.

Whenever possible your guide will include inside visits of venues such as the Guildhall, the Roman Amphitheatre and churches by architects such as Wren and Hawksmoor.
