The British constructed Fort Howe in 1777 as a response to several requests from the residents around the mouth of the Saint John River that their small settlement be protected from further attacks by American privateers. With its location on a towering rock offering unmatched views of the harbour and up the river, Fort Howe and its garrison provided protection to the surrounding settlements through the end of the War of 1812. The original fort consisted of a blockhouse and barracks within a palisade on the western end of the hill, and a blockhouse at the eastern end, and was manned by a detachment of the Royal Fencible Americans under Major Gilfred Studholme. After the founding of Parrtown, later renamed Saint John, in 1783, the fort served as the military headquarters, as well as the first civil jail for the new town.

Discover Saint John through a new lens! Inside Out Nature Centre and Millennium Cycle and Sport have teamed up to bring you guided bike tours through the heart of Saint John. Starting at the Lily Lake Pavilion, the group rides will take you through some of Saint John’s most iconic places before you stop for a refreshing beer at the new Moosehead Small Batch Brewery. During this 2.5 to 3 hour tour, your experienced guide will take you leisurely through 15 kilometers of Saint John’s most picturesque lookouts and cityscapes, sharing the stories of Fort Howe, Reversing Rapids and Fort LaTour, while you stop to take some photos. When you arrive at Moosehead, relax and sip on a refreshing special crafted brew, and take in the sights and history of Canada’s largest and oldest independent brewery before peddling your way along Harbour Passage, through the Public Gardens, and back to Rockwood Park. *Tour includes one 16oz Moosehead beverage. Participants must be 19 years or older.

First brewed in 1865 by our matriarch Susannah Oland in her backyard, then for our Saint John community in 2018 in our Small Batch Brewery and Taproom; Susannah’s Brown Ale has always been enjoyed by family and friends. Moosehead Small Batch Brewery is our new home for innovation. After celebrating 150 years of brewing, we’re excited to expand our portfolio and use our new small batch brewing system to create truly innovative and unique brews to enjoy in our Tap Room and take home.

Carleton Martello Tower in Saint John, New Brunswick, is one of the nine surviving Martello Towers in Canada. The tower dates from the War of 1812 and played a significant role in conflicts until the Second World War. The site now features a restored powder magazine, a restored barracks room, and exhibits in the tower and in the visitor centre. The tower's roof offers a view of the city of Saint John and its harbour. Carleton Martello Tower is one of the oldest buildings in the city and has been designated as a National Historic Site of Canada since 1930. It has been open to the public since 1963.

A series of interconnected walking and biking trails, lookouts and heritage sites that connects the north and west sides of the city to the uptown. Interpretive structures and panels offer a unique way to interpret our city’s rich, layered heritage and our extraordinary natural environment. Witness the ebb and flow of some of the Highest Tides in the World, enjoying spectacular views of Saint John Harbour's working port.
