Edinburgh is Scotland's capital and one of the country's 32 local government regions. It is the second-largest city in Scotland and the United Kingdom's seventh-largest metropolis. Edinburgh has been the seat of Scotland's government, parliament, and highest courts since at least the 15th century. The monarch's formal residence in Scotland is the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. The city has historically been a centre of learning, especially in medicine, Scots law, literature, philosophy, science, and engineering. It is the United Kingdom's second-largest financial centre, and the city's historical and cultural attractions have made it the UK's second-most visited tourist destination.

Enjoy free admission to Edinburgh Castle, where you can marvel at the sparkling Scottish Crown Jewels and photograph breathtaking panoramic views of the city’s famous skyline. Edinburgh Castle is one of the most visited paid tourist destination in Scotland and the United Kingdom. As one of Scotland's most prominent fortresses, the castle was involved in several historical wars, from the 14th century Scottish Independence Wars through the 1745 Jacobite Rising. The Edinburgh Military Tattoo (officially known as the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo since 2010) is a series of performances that takes place on the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle every year during the month of August. A procession of massed pipes and drums from Scottish regiments forms the framework for each performance, and since its start in 1950, the tattoo has evolved into a complicated format that incorporates a range of performers invited from around the world, while maintaining a primarily military focus.

Also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, St Giles' Cathedral is a parish church of the Church of Scotland located in the Old Town of Edinburgh. It was built in the 12th century and is dedicated to St Giles the Great. It is believed that the existing structure was first constructed in the 14th century and expanded until the early 16th century; considerable renovations were carried out in the 19th and 20th centuries, including the addition of the Thistle Chapel.

Located in the heart of Edinburgh, Scotland's capital, Princes Street is a significant boulevard that serves as the city's primary shopping district. In Edinburgh's New Town, it is the southernmost street, extending approximately 1.2 km (three quarters of a mile) from Lothian Road in the west to Leith Street in the east. Located on the southern end of Princes Street Gardens, the street has few buildings and offers spectacular panoramas over Edinburgh's Old Town as well as the castle and the surrounding valley. All traffic is prohibited on much of the street, with only the eastern end available to all modes of transportation.
