The village of Vouves is located 26km west of the town of Chania. The village actually consists of two smaller parts: Ano Vouves and Kato Vouves. Ano Vouves is where the world-known Monumental Olive Tree can be seen, estimated to be around 4,000 years old and being perhaps the oldest olive tree in the globe that still produces olives. It was from the branches of this tree that the wreath with which the winner of the Olympic Marathon in Athens 2004 was honorary crowned, by decision of the organizing committee; so was the wreath for the relative winner of the Olympic Games in Beijing 2008. Next to the Monumental Olive Tree there is a small museum creating a uniform and harmonious ensemble, while a traditional restaurant can serve you delicious wine and traditional Cretan food.
