22 km east of Chania, the pretty little seaside village of Almerida has two gently shelving sandy beaches fringed by sleepy waterside tavernas as well as a small fishing harbour and little rocky coves, with the sea a marvellous melange of colours from deep aquamarine to a pastel turquoise. A decade ago Almirida was just a fishing village and a weekend watering hole for local Greeks from Chania. Times change of course and Almirida has slowly grown into a small resort with a number of villas, apartments and quite a few hotels. Curiously enough though, the Greeks still come at weekends, the fishermen still fish and the waterside tavernas still have a laid back unhurried atmosphere where time is of no consequence and you can sit for hours lingering over a meal.

The village now has several mini markets as well as a bakers, an internet cafe and a couple of quite trendy bars. Mountain bikes can be hired locally and on the beach you can rent sun beds. The
